SECONDHAND BOOKS | Australian Fiction
Political novel that explores the personal highways that lead the central character, Mike Langford, a war photographer, to his ultimate fate. Set in Cambodia following its fall to the Khmer Rouge, the plot explores the photo-journalist's role in assisting the badly-led South Vietnamese and Cambodian troops. Langford's obsession with their plight eventually drives him to put down his camera and pick up a gun. In doing so he takes on a mythical quality. Winner of the 1996 Miles Franklin Award. There is a companion historical novel, 'Out of Ireland' (1999), which was awarded the 2000 Victorian Premier's Literary Award Vance Palmer Prize for Fiction. Author's other works include 'The Year of Living Dangerously' and the screenplay of that novel, which was nominated for an Academy Award.
