In 1978 Iain Finlay and Trish Sheppard travelled some 40,000 kilometres from Toronto in Canada to Tierra del Fuego at the bottom tip of South America. What makes their journey more unusual than others is that they made it with their two young children, Zara, eleven, and Sean, ten, using only public transport; buses, trains, hitchhiking where necessary, and carrying nothing more than a backpack each.
Their story, which follows the same style as their very successful book Africa Overland, tells of a journey full of interesting characters, incidents and meetings. It also takes a brief and often wry look at some of the history, politics and way of life of the countries they visited -- not a historian's, economist's or sociologist's look, but the down-to-earth, personal view of two journalists. |
