THE LETTERS AND PRIVATE PAPERS OF WILLIAM MAKEPEACE THACKERAY - 4 VOLUME SET - SIGNED

Author(s): GORDON N RAY (ed)

RARE AND COLLECTIBLE | BIOGRAPHY

1945. 1945 (Vol's 1 and 2) and 1946 (Vol's 3 and 4). All First editions. A very good set all uniformly bound in red cloth boards with gilt lettering to the spines. The boards are all sunfaded to the spines and have some minor fading/wear to the boards. Light age tanning to the edges and endpapers but otherwise the contents are fine and unmarked. Apart from being a very nice set in their own right Volume 1 has some very special characteristics. The first is a SIGNED letter by W M Thackeray which has been neatly affixed to the front pastedown. It is believed the letter was to Mark Lemon the founding editor of Punch and The Field. The letter is written on the inside of an envelope and is very well preserved. The second characteristic that sets this set apart is a SIGNED and dated inscription (to the front free endpaper) by Hester Thackeray Fuller (W M Thackeray's granddaughter and the person to whom Ray dedicated this work) to Elspeth Winster the wife of Lord Winster the former British Labour Minister and Governor of Cyprus. The third characteristic is a SIGNED note from Hester to Elspeth which mentions the inclusion of the letter from Thackeray thus confirming it's provenance. All in all an amazing association piece for Thackeray collectors. Scans available if required.
